    DDR3 Vs DDR2

I am currently evaluating various laptops that can run multiple virtual machines simultaneously. One of the key components I’m evaluating is the RAM. Both DDR2 and DDR3 based RAM modules are available today. If budget permits I will definitely go for DDR3 because of two advantages 1) faster 1067MHz as against 667 or 800 MHz in DDR2 and 2) 30% less power consumption, this will lead to better battery life for my computer

    This article is very informative.

Two Standards - Is there a problem?

The discussion over Open Office XML (OOXML) is heating up these days as the voting date for considering it as an ISO standard is nearing. I don't think that having two standards (ODF is already there) is a problem to anyone as long as they are interoperable. Look at CDMA and GSM standards in wireless phone industry. They are very much interoperable. In fact multiple standards give more options to the end user. Different formats would have different capabilities and users should have enough choices based on their need. IBM and Sun are playing a cheap game in an attempt to beat Microsoft.

    New Year...New Resolutions

For me today is the beginning of a new fiscal year. Unlike previous years I am well prepared to take up the new challenges. This year I am going to work on a lot more technologies than ever before. It was a tough decision for me to restrict the scope of my work to a limited number of products as everything coming out of Microsoft these days is super exciting for me. So I have decided to beat the following products to death :)

    • System Center Essentials 2007
    • Office Communications Server 2007
    • Exchange Server 2007
    • Windows Server 2008 ( I want to call out "Virtualization" here )
    • Forefront products suite .....I think this is enough. My plate is full :)

Great News for Vista VPN Users

One of the reasons that pulled business users back from deploying Windows Vista in their mobile PCs is the lack of availability of supported VPN client. I think this problem is solved for ever because both Checkpoint and Cisco have come up with vista compatible VPN clients. For more details click here for Cisco VPN client and Checkpoint VPN client

Cool Thngs I found In Office 2007

    • In Outlook while sending mails one can choose the folder where the sent mails are stored. By default all “sent mails” are saved in “Sent Items” folder. But you can change this through setting under “Options”

    • Outlook reminds the user that OOF is ON when he/she connects back to the corporate network for the first time

    • “Outlook Anywhere” is cool. Earlier this was known as RPC over HTTP. If this feature is enabled Outlook is not going to ask you for user name and password even if you are connecting to the server from the Internet. Just start the Outlook; it’ll download all the e-mails for you!

    • SmartArt is a cool feature in PowerPoint 2007. This helps you to easily convert bulleted points into pictorial form. So what I do these days while making presentations is write down all my points in bulleted text first and choose an appropriate SmartArt shape. PowerPoint 2007 has tens of such shapes built into it. Even a novice user has can create stunning presentation in a matter of seconds using this feature. To access this feature, just right click the bulleted text that you want to convert. You will find the option Convert to SmartArt option
